CULTILIGHT PLANNING TOOL

Compare LED and HPS Operating Costs

Estimate annual electricity use and operating-cost savings for two grow-lighting systems designed to meet the same crop-level lighting target.

System and operating assumptions

Use actual fixture input power, including the LED driver or HPS ballast.

HPS system
fixtures
Total fixtures in the HPS comparison layout.
W
Use total system draw, not lamp rating alone.
LED system
fixtures
Total fixtures in the proposed LED layout.
W
Use fixture input power at the planned setting.
Operating conditions
hours/day
Average daily operating time for both systems.
days/year
Use the expected annual production schedule.
CAD/kWh
Use the effective rate, including applicable energy charges.

Optional payback and CO₂ inputs
CAD
LED project cost minus the comparable HPS project cost.
kg CO₂e/kWh
Use a current factor for the electricity supplied to your facility.

From connected load to annual operating cost

Each system's connected load is calculated from fixture quantity and actual input power. The calculator applies the same operating schedule to both systems, then multiplies annual electricity use by your effective electricity rate.

Annual electricity use Fixtures × watts ÷ 1,000 × hours/day × days/year
Annual operating cost Annual kWh × electricity rate

When an additional LED investment is entered, simple payback is calculated by dividing that incremental cost by the estimated annual operating-cost savings.

01

Compare equivalent designs

Use LED and HPS layouts intended to deliver the same crop-level lighting target.

02

Enter actual system draw

Include driver or ballast consumption and the planned LED operating setting.

03

Use facility-specific costs

Apply your production schedule and effective electricity rate for a useful estimate.

Energy cost is one part of a commercial lighting decision

Equivalent light delivery

Fixture count alone does not establish equivalence. Compare designs at the same canopy-level PPFD, DLI and uniformity target.

Actual power draw

Rated lamp wattage may exclude ballast losses. Use measured or manufacturer-confirmed total system input power.

Electricity pricing

Utility bills may include demand charges, time-of-use rates and seasonal pricing that a simple energy rate cannot capture.

Whole-facility effects

Cooling, heating, dehumidification, maintenance and lamp replacement can materially affect total project economics.
