HOW THE CALCULATION WORKS
The calculator first subtracts the natural-light DLI from the target DLI. It then distributes that missing daily light across the planned operating hours of the supplemental lighting system.
If you enter a planning factor below 100%, the direct canopy requirement is divided by that percentage. This creates a higher preliminary planning target to account for the margin you selected.
Enter the total DLI appropriate for the crop and growth stage.
Use the DLI that actually reaches the crop after glazing, structure and shading losses.
Enter the number of hours the supplemental system will run each day.
IMPORTANT PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS
Natural-light DLI changes with season, weather, latitude and greenhouse transmission.
An average PPFD can hide low-light areas. A practical layout must consider distribution and uniformity.
Canopy height, density, row spacing and crop architecture affect how photons reach productive tissue.
Mounting height, obstructions, reflectivity, electrical capacity and climate strategy influence the final system.
